What "independent cafe loyalty" actually means
A single, owner-run cafe has different constraints to a chain: no marketing team to push app downloads, no dedicated loyalty budget, and a counter that gets slammed during the morning rush. A loyalty system that works for an independent cafe has to be quick to set up, cheap to run, and simple enough for any staff member to operate without training.
It also has to do more than store a count. The systems that keep customers coming back combine low-friction check-in with automated re-engagement — an anniversary message, a nudge to a regular who has not been in for a while, a prompt to leave a Google review after a few visits — rather than leaving all of that follow-up to the owner to remember.
Comparing loyalty approaches for independent cafes
Five ways to run cafe loyalty, and who each one actually suits.
Dedicated loyalty apps (e.g. Stamp Me)
Customers download a dedicated app to their phone, register, and join the loyalty program inside it — some platforms then let the member code also be shown via Apple Wallet or Google Wallet for faster checkout.
Best for: Chains and multi-location brands with a marketing budget to drive app installs.
Watch out for: Download friction. A meaningful share of customers will not complete an app install and account signup during a coffee order.
POS-based loyalty (e.g. Square Loyalty)
Loyalty is tracked inside your point-of-sale system, with points or stamps awarded at checkout.
Best for: Cafes already fully committed to that POS ecosystem who want loyalty bundled with payments.
Watch out for: Tied to the till. It only works through that POS, so a manual register, a second location on a different system, or switching providers can mean starting your loyalty data over.
Digital wallet stamp cards (e.g. Loopy Loyalty)
A virtual stamp card added directly to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet via a QR code or link — no dedicated app to download or join through.
Best for: Cafes wanting a lightweight, wallet-native card with minimal setup and low commitment.
Watch out for: Light on automated re-engagement. Most wallet-card tools focus on the stamp card itself, not on bringing lapsed customers back or requesting reviews automatically.
Paper stamp cards
A physical card stamped or hole-punched at the counter on each visit.
Best for: The cheapest possible way to start — no software, no setup.
Watch out for: No customer data captured, cards get lost or forgotten, and stamps are easy to fake without a way to verify them.
My Cafe Loyalty — no-app QR check-in
Customers scan a QR code and check in with their phone number. Name and mobile the first time (about 30 seconds), one tap every visit after.
Best for: Independent cafes that want no-app simplicity plus automated re-engagement — anniversary messages, win-back campaigns, and Google Review requests — without asking customers to download anything.
Watch out for: A subscription rather than a one-off purchase: unlimited customers, 3 plans from $49/month, 30-day free trial.

Automated re-engagement, not just a stamp count
Anniversary messages
An automated SMS on the anniversary of a customer's first visit, sent without the owner having to remember. Available on Professional and above.
Win-back campaigns
Lapsed regulars get an automated nudge to come back, instead of quietly churning. Available on Business.
Google Review requests
Automated review prompts default to firing after the 6th and 12th visit. Available on Business.
Which should you choose?
Already all-in on one POS and don't need marketing automation? Its built-in loyalty add-on (e.g. Square Loyalty) keeps everything in one system.
Want the cheapest possible start and don't need customer data? A paper stamp card costs nothing beyond printing.
Want a lightweight wallet card and don't need automated follow-up? A digital wallet stamp card (e.g. Loopy Loyalty) is low-commitment and wallet-native.
Multi-location chain with a marketing budget for app installs? A dedicated branded app can justify the download.
An independent Australian cafe that wants no-app simplicity plus automated re-engagement? That's what My Cafe Loyalty is built for.
Common questions
What's the best loyalty program for an independent cafe?
For an independent Australian cafe, the best fit is usually a no-app QR check-in system: customers scan a code and check in with their phone number, so there is no app download to lose customers over. My Cafe Loyalty pairs that with automated re-engagement — anniversary messages, win-back campaigns for lapsed regulars, and Google Review requests — which a paper card or a basic wallet stamp card does not offer. Cafes fully built around one POS (like Square) may prefer that POS's own loyalty add-on instead.
Do my customers need an app?
No. Customers scan a QR code with their phone camera and check in through a web page — nothing to download and no account to create. The first visit takes about 30 seconds (name and mobile number); every visit after that is a single tap.
How much does it cost?
My Cafe Loyalty has three public plans: Starter at $49/month, Professional at $79/month, and Business at $169/month, all with unlimited customers and a 30-day free trial. SMS features (welcome, reward, anniversary messages) are available on Professional and above; Google Review automation and win-back campaigns are available on Business. Other approaches vary — POS-based loyalty pricing depends on your POS provider, and wallet-card or app-based tools set their own pricing, so check their current pricing directly. See pricing.
How does reward redemption work?
There is no redemption code for the customer to find or screenshot. When a customer has earned a reward, staff look them up by name or mobile number at the counter and confirm the redemption. Check-ins are limited to once per 12 hours per customer, which keeps the count honest.
Can I bring back regulars who have stopped visiting?
Yes, on the Business plan. Win-back campaigns identify customers who have gone quiet and send them an automated re-engagement message, alongside anniversary messages (Professional and above) and Google Review requests, which default to firing after the 6th and 12th visit. A paper card or a plain digital stamp card has no equivalent — bringing a lapsed customer back would be entirely manual.
Does it work with my POS?
Yes. My Cafe Loyalty runs independently of your point-of-sale system — customers check in by scanning a QR code, not through the till — so it works alongside any POS, or even a manual register, with no integration required. That is different from POS-based loyalty (like Square Loyalty), which only works through that specific POS.
Is a paper stamp card good enough for an independent cafe?
It is the cheapest way to start and needs no software, but it captures no customer data, cards get lost or forgotten, and stamps are easy to fake. It cannot send an anniversary message, win back a lapsed regular, or ask for a Google review automatically — everything beyond the stamp itself has to be done by hand.
